With elections for County Executive set to take in a little over a year, candidates in Prince George’s County are already beginning to campaign in an effort to try and win support of prospective voters.
Rushern Baker, a former candidate in 2004, has once again formed an Exploratory Committee in an attempt to make another possible run for Prince George’s County Executive in 2006.
On June 26, Friends of Rushern Baker hosted a Barbeque at Tantallon Country Club in Fort Washington. This event is one of a few that have taken place over the past couple of months aimed at getting members of the community to come out to meet him and learn more about his goals to help improve Prince George’s County.

With over 200 people in attendance, the venue was the perfect setting for an informal opportunity for Baker to meet and greet prospective voters and speak on issues faced in the County.
Other prominent local figures in attendance included Prince George’s County Public Schools Board Member Howard Stone. As Vice Chair of the school board, he says that the county is looking to improve technology in the classrooms, by providing more high tech equipment. “Highly qualified teachers can use technology to emphasize math and reading. We are looking to be able to compete with other school systems,” he said.
Baker addressed those in attendance by first giving a brief background of who he was. He mentioned his humble beginnings as a kid growing up in the South and how his family often moved, due to his father’s military career. After seeing a local politician on television and disagreeing with his policies, Baker knew that he had the ability to make a difference and realized that a career in politics was what he wanted for his life.
As a former victim of crime in his own county, he has a first hand account of how out of control many feel things have become. He believes that the problem is increasing due to a lack of leadership in the County. By demanding funding for the Police Department, he feels as if it would allow more officers to be on the streets combating crime.
With his own children attending Prince George’s County Public Schools, he also recognized how the school system is failing and ranking next to last behind other local jurisdictions. “Current elected officials are not putting education first, not representing us,” he said. “We should expect leaders to make sound judgments on our behalf,” he added.
Although many residents in attendance have already decided to stand behind Baker and were there for support, there were quite a few newcomers who wanted to come out and learn more about the possible candidate.
Donnie Cunningham of Upper Marlboro met Baker for the first time and seemed impressed with him. “He seems very nice and personable. Although I do not claim any political party affiliation, I was interested in meeting him to see what issues he stood for,” he said.
Baker encouraged participants to remain open to his ideas, as he continues to work to continue to improve the state of Prince George’s County. “If you work with us to help me help Prince George’s, I promise that I will be accountable.”
Some of his other campaign platforms include the opposition of slots in Prince George’s County and the support of Smart Growth Initiatives.
Baker is a graduate of Howard University School of Law, and has served as Legal Counsel for the Prince George’s County Redevelopment Authority. He also served four years as Chairman of the Prince George’s House of Delegates.
