Is Change Gonna Come?

Excitement is brewing within the Black community over Barack Obama taking the oath of office and local residents seem to be feeling an equal amount of anticipation for the leadership that will come under three new City Council members.  Timing is everything and these new leaders could not have come at a more perfect time.  As all Americans find themselves in the midst of a very tense and fragile global climate, there is a tremendous desire to grasp hold of security and grip firm onto faith.

Many African Americans have come to believe that Obama represents hope, as he called it “God’s greatest gift to us, the bedrock of this nation; the belief in things not seen; the belief that there are better days ahead.”  His discussion of poverty, unemployment, homelessness, violence and socio-economic disparities reveal that political leaders can no longer sugar coat the ills of their constituents.

Right here in D.C., the city watched three incumbents get ousted by one veteran and two newcomers that promised to address the concerns of the down-trodden.  Believing that their needs have been ignored in an effort to meet the demands of big business, the residents of the nation’s capital are looking to these three to offer a voice that has not been heard in the Council chambers in recent years.

Black America is screaming for change and begging for sound leadership but will it come?  Will these politicians deliver on their word or will we find them to be empty promises?

The time has come for Black leadership to take hold of the greatest problems within the community and actively work with the people to devise a strategy of uplift.  Voters have been disappointed all too often. It is time for those in positions of power to do what they say they will do and be who they say they are.
