What does our choice of President mean for the future of the U.S. Supreme Court?

Eboni Green
Clarence Thomas [has] never been the type of Black man that’s been for his race so you never know what he might implement, what he might take away. But we know from his history that he’s really not going to do anything specifically to better the African American race. As for the Roe vs. Wade decision, I personally believe that every woman has the right to do anything that she wants to do with her body. Congress should not be able to step in and say what we can and can’t do. Whoever gets in office, some really big things are going to happen that will really affect our lives.

If Bush is elected, we will begin to lose all of our rights, starting with the right to abortion and things like that. If Kerry is elected, the next Supreme Court Justice that retires- he will hopefully be able to replace him with a more liberal minded person. [If Bush was in a position to choose new Justices, it would mean] absolute chaos, going back to the Dark Ages. It will be a serious attack on everything that we have come to know as Americans- our privacy, our civil liberties, race relations, women’s rights, anything across the board. He’s so far conservative and so far out of touch with the majority of the consensus in this country that it will have grave consequences for our future.

It wouldn’t be good for the African American community as far as the Supreme Court being more conservative if Bush wins. [Our civil liberties] are already affected with the Patriot Act. I don’t know if it can get any worse…it can get worse. Kerry is the lesser of the two evils; I think that he would be a little better but I don’t know how much really.

Prado, a Texas federal judge, that I used to work for is up to be the next person to be on the Supreme Court and I just think that (even though he’s my friend) it’s not going to work with all the Republicans in the Supreme Court because we saw what happened in the last election where the Supreme Court basically chose the president. I just feel that if he’s elected again for president and we have all the Republicans in the Supreme Court, it’s going to be messed up for us.
