Hundreds Attended Resume Writing, Job Searching, Communications, and Financial Literacy Skills Workshops”

On Wednesday, May 19th 2010, Councilmember Michael A. Brown hosted a series of Job Readiness Workshops as a part of his Brown Blueprint for Employment Success Job Initiative. The session filled classrooms at TheARC DC to capacity, with more than 200 registrants clamoring to get a spot in the various workshop held throughout the day.

“I am very pleased at the overwhelmingly positive response by District residents to workshops. We have to make sure that District residents not only have an opportunity at employment, but that they are also prepared to succeed with those opportunities,” said Councilmember Brown after the event.
The workshops were facilitated by professionals from The University of Phoenix Online- DC Campus, Capital Area Asset Builders (CAAB), DC Department of Employment Services (DOES), and Capitol Business Solutions, LLC, who shared best practices for a successful job search. “Laying Your Blueprint,” a resume workshop, focused on improving resident resume writing skills and the basics of a good resume.

“Delivering Your Message,” a communications skills workshop, discussed effective ways to communicate with employers and colleagues in a job interview and while in the workplace. “Making Dollars into Sense” focused on managing earnings and instilling responsible financial practices into residents. The final workshop, “Search and Seizure,” discussed best practices for looking for and keeping a job.

Councilmember Brown rallied workshop participants with an opening address, remarking, “We have people coming from outside this city and taking jobs that should go to you all. Our goal today is to make sure that you can compete, and to get you ready not only for next week’s job fair, but for any job opportunity that comes your way.”

The participants who completed the entire module of four workshops were rewarded with a “Priority Interview Certificate” for the May 26th Job fair which will place at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington , FBR Branch, 1901 Mississippi Avenue, SE . The certificate will give the residents priority interview status at the Fair.

The Brown Blueprint for Employment Success has a three-part focus: Job Readiness, Job Acquisition, and Job Support. Residents were given information on follow up Job Support Classes to be administered by The Temple of Praise. The follow up classes will begin on June 2, 2010..
