Dr. Alyce Gullattee, a Howard University psychiatry professor and good friend of late D.C. Mayor Marion Barry, died Thursday at a Maryland hospital from the coronavirus. She was 91.

According to family members, Gullattee had tested positive for COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus, at a rehabilitation center. At the time of her death, she was still on staff at the Howard University Medical School.

Howard President Wayne A.I. Frederick, a student of Gullattee’s while in medical school, said he had known her for at least 30 years and that her death was a great loss to the D.C. community.

Gullattee had also been a staple at her house of worship, Union Temple Baptist Church in southeast D.C.
