Approximately 1,500 nurses have died from the novel coronavirus worldwide, according to an analysis from the International Council of Nurses.
The toll is an increase from 1,097 in August, but is likely much higher because the group was only able to gather data from 44 of the world’s 195 countries, CNN reported.
The council’s analysis says about 10 percent of coronavirus cases throughout the world are among health care workers.
The council represents more than 130 national nursing associations with 20 million members globally, CNN reported.
ICN Chief Executive Officer Howard Catton said at a virtual conference last week that his organization has been requesting since May 2020 a standardized and systematic collection of data on health care workers infections and deaths “and the fact that is still not happening is a scandal,” according to CNN.
As of Monday, roughly 47 million coronavirus cases and 1.2 million related deaths have been reported worldwide, according to a Johns Hopkins University tracker.
