The 64-year-old retired real estate investor who shot and killed at least 59 people and wounded more than 500 others Sunday night in Las Vegas has left authorities at loss for a motive.

The gunman, Stephen Paddock, who also died Sunday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, reportedly had no history of violence when he holed up in a casino hotel room with 23 high-powered guns and fired hundreds rounds into a crowd of country music concertgoers.

The resulting carnage has now been labeled the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.

Paddock — who lived in a retirement community in Mesquite, Nevada, and had gambled thousands of dollars in recent weeks — is believed to have acted alone, authorities said.

His brother told reporters the gunman’s actions were totally out of character.
