D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser signed an executive order Wednesday to begin the first phase of the city’s reopening amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“We have a shared responsibility to stop the spread of the virus, even as we reopen,” Bowser said at a press conference. “We also have a special responsibility to protect those who are vulnerable because of age, underlying conditions or health disparities. … If we don’t take them seriously we risk losing the progress we’ve made by our shared sacrifice.”
Under phase one, which goes into effect at 12:01 a.m. Friday, the mayor’s stay-at-home order will be lifted.
Retail businesses can begin offering curbside and delivery service, while restaurants can seat up to six people per outside table, with six feet between each table.
Barbershops and hair salons can reopen but are permitted to service customers by appointment only.
