The Charles County Public Schools announced masks are no longer mandatory on school campuses beginning Thursday.

The school system said in a statement Wednesday that students, staff and visitors are still strongly urged to wear masks but will no longer be required to do so.

However, students may be required to wear a mask if directed by a school nurse or while in medical isolation for possible exposure to the coronavirus.

The school systems consulted with the Maryland Department of Education, state and local health departments and the county’s health officer prior to changing the policy, according to the statement.
