With the spread of the coronavirus spreading more rampantly in Florida, President Trump on Thursday dismissed plans for a Republican National Convention celebration that would have taken place Aug. 24-27 in Jacksonville.
In June, Trump moved the national convention from Charlotte to Jacksonville because he could not come to terms with North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) on the size of the crowds and whether proper social distancing protocols would have been practiced during the event.
At Thursday’s press briefing Trump said that at this point, the Jacksonville event would have been too risky.
“It’s a different world, and it will be for a little while,” the president said in a WTOP interview. “To have a big convention is not the right time.”
A small group of GOP delegates in Charlotte will re-nominate Trump for president on Aug. 24. during a four-hour event.
