D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is reminding drivers of the Thursday deadline to renew expired driver licenses and identification cards before additional requirements are necessary.

Bowser’s office also stressed a Sept. 30 deadline for an amnesty program that provides the opportunity to pay, without the doubling penalty, outstanding tickets for parking, photo enforcement and minor moving violations.

During the coronavirus pandemic, the mayor issued an executive order stating that driver’s licenses and ID cards expiring after March 1, 2020, would remain valid. However, if an expired license is not renewed by Sept. 9, the motorist will have to begin the license issue process again.

For example, if a driver’s license has been expired more than 365 days from March 1, 2020, the license holder must take and pass the knowledge test or take the District’s online traffic school course.

In cases where a driver’s license has been expired for more than 545 days from March 1, 2020, the applicant must retake both the knowledge and road skills tests (which are by appointment only).

Tickets issued before Sept. 30, 2021, qualify for the four-month amnesty program.

Also, residents with a REAL ID driver’s license or REAL ID non-driver identification card (star in upper-right corner) may renew online, by mail, or through the D.C. Department of Motor Vehicles app. Those with a non-REAL ID driver’s license or D.C. non-driver identification card must provide additional documentation and renew their credential in person at a DMV Service Center.
