Breast Cancer Support
Ketcham Elementary School staff recently dressed in pink in support of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All money raised was donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.
School Cited for Health Efforts
Seaton Elementary School in Northwest has been cited as one of America’s healthiest schools.
Seaton, one of 14 schools and the only one from D.C. given this distinction, received the highest level of recognition for meeting the strict standards of the alliance’s Healthy Schools program.
Some of the foods the students eat during the school day comes from Seaton’s own garden, and instead of being rewarded with candy for their healthy efforts, the students engage in exercises such as dance parties and athletic races.
“The healthier you eat, the happier you are, the better the well-being, and we think that we are touching all parts of our students,” Kim Jackson told WJLA-TV (Channel 7).
Board of Education Workshops
The DC State Board of Education held a working session on Nov. 2 where several important topics were discussed, including public engagement on the new accountability system, for which a final plan is due in the spring.
In addition, the Office of the State Superintendent of Education will continue its discussion of newly-proposed residency regulations.
Although public comment on the proposed regulations through OSSE has closed, additional information and comment are welcomed prior to the school board vote on Nov. 16.
Woodrow Wilson to Present Musical
Woodrow Wilson High School’s award-winning theater department presents “Urine Town, the Musical,” directed by Harriet Bronstein and Jill Roos.
The presentation takes place at the school’s auditorium:
- Nov. 11, 7:30 p.m.
- Nov. 12, 7:30 p.m.
- Nov. 18, 7:30 p.m.
- Nov. 19, 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, “Urine Town, the Musical” is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny.
Tickets are $5 for students and staff, $15 for all others.
Banneker Shows Double-Digit PARCC Gains
The “Banneker Achievers” are being lauded their outstanding Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers scores, which showed double-digit gains.
Benjamin Banneker High School in Northwest had significant increases on PARCC this fall, with a 24 percent increase in English Language Arts and a 30 percent increase in math.
“I’m thrilled that Banneker has made such gains on PARCC,” said Anita Berger, the school’s principal. “We already had great teachers and a great curriculum in place, but we were deliberate in our increased offering of [Advanced Placement] courses, our emphasis on content mastery, and relaying the importance of this exam to our students and families.”
