D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has designated Oct. 18 as “Robert Hooks Day” in honor of the District-born actor and the company he founded 47 years ago.
Hooks, 81, also a political activist, has acted in numerous films, as well as on television and stage. He performed in his first play, “The Pirates of Penzance,” at the age of 9. After graduating from Francis Junior High School, Hooks attended Armstrong High School in D.C. His TV career began in 1963 with the role of a police detective on the television series “East Side/West Side.”
The DC Black Repertory Company Alumni Association and Multi-Media Training Institute will honor Hooks and 12 other luminary leaders who were integral members of the company during a two-day celebration on Oct. 18-19.
The Oct. 18 celebration which begins at 5:30 p.m. at Busboys and Poets at 14th and V streets in Northwest, will include an exhibition of 26 years of theater memorabilia curated by Carol Dyson.
On Oct. 19, the tribute continues from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. with a gala awards celebration at the Lincoln Theatre in Northwest. Performers will include Sweet Honey in The Rock and The Dance Institute of Washington, with narration by veteran network star Kene Holliday of “Matlock” and “Carter’s Country” fame.
