D.C. residents will get a little more time to renew their driver’s licenses or ID cards, now that the Department of Motor Vehicles has extended the deadline to Sept. 9.
The new deadline — extended from July 1 — allows time for renewals that require an in-person appointment at DMV service centers.
Other departmental changes that began this month include an increase of the number of new appointments released each week from 6,000 to 10,000 as DMV employees return to work and the agency increases its operating capacity.
Also, the agency’s Rhode Island Service Center will reopen at full capacity beginning Friday, June 25. Employees will continue to work overtime so appointments may be scheduled on select Monday and Wednesday evenings.
D.C. residents with REAL ID-compliant credentials (black star in upper right corner) can renew online at dmv.dc.gov, by mail, or through the department’s mobile app. There is no appointment option for those residents.
Additionally, “Senior Appointment” service is only for residents 65 or older. Residents 70 and older must make an in-person appointment for a driver’s license application, regardless of whether their license is REAL ID-compliant, in order to provide medical certification.
