Playwright Alfred Uhry’s “Driving Miss Daisy,” the first in what is known as his “Atlanta Trilogy” of plays, began a run last week at the Anacostia Playhouse in Southeast.
The play, directed by Ella Davis, co-founder and executive director for All About the Drama Theatre Group, opened Friday and will run through Dec. 23.
Produced off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons, “Driving Miss Daisy,” which deals with the relationship between an elderly Jewish woman and her Black chauffeur, earned Uhry the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The 1989 film starring Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman won the Academy Award for Writing Adapted Screenplay, in addition to Tandy’s win for best actress.
The onstage actors for the Anacostia performances include James Foster Jr. as Hoke Coleburn, Adele Robey as Daisy Wertham, and Matty Griffiths as Boolie.
