The Supreme Court granted President Trump with a gift earlier this week — allowing him to fully enforce his revised order banning travel to the U.S. by residents of six mostly-Muslim countries, even while legal challenges to it continue in lower courts.

But in an unsigned opinion released on Monday, the justices failed to disclose the court’s reasoning for lifting injunctions that had been issued by federal judges in Hawaii and Maryland.

Trump and the White House can finally claim success after seeing courts eat away at various portions of the travel ban. And Trump seems to be in the driver’s seat should the Court be asked to decide the full merits of the president’s actions.

Still, it seems as if America, once the “land of the free and home of the brave,” the country on the hill that always had its doors opens for those who sought a better life, or who hoped to escape persecution, has become, or at least is quickly becoming, a very different place. And we don’t like what we see.

Trump has made no bones about his negative feelings about Muslims. Nor has he easily swallowed his lack of authority when it comes to revising immigration laws. That said, we simply cannot fathom why the president and other Republicans, as well as the justices of the Supreme Court, find it appropriate to ban people from entire countries on the grounds of their religious beliefs.

Surely, there has to be something else in the equation. Or is there?
