With special guests who will include Tamika Mallory, Stacey Abrams, Tina Knowles-Lawson, Tamela Mann, Trae Tha Truth and Kierra Sheard, the George Floyd family will gather in Houston for the George Floyd Commemorative Concert on Sunday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner will be among the presenters along with other speakers and choirs, John P. Kee, Shareeduh McGee, president of the George Floyd Foundation (GFF) and George’s cousin; Dr. Remus E. Wright, senior pastor, and Mia K. Wright, co-pastor of Fountain of Praise, the Rev. Jamal Bryant; the Phillip Hall Singers; and the George Floyd Ensemble.
The event will commemorate the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s tragic death and serve as a reminder of the continued fight for #JusticeforGeorge and so many others who have lost their lives unjustly. It will be an all-white affair and open to the public. The event will be held at Houston’s Fountain of Praise Church, where Floyd’s funeral took place.
The George Floyd Foundation was founded by the family of Floyd as a response to his brutal murder on Memorial Day when a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds.
“George’s ‘I can’t breathe’ plea for his life was a cry heard around the world,” said a spokesperson for the Foundation. “GFF is dedicated to ensuring that George’s plea never goes unanswered, that George’s voice is never again silenced and that the community is served by achieving greater access to social justice education and advocacy, youth services and workforce development programs to assist with relieving the burden of inequality and injustice.”
