Retired NFL player Herschel Walker, one of less than a handful of people of people of color to speak on opening night of the Republican National Convention, staunchly defended President Donald Trump as not being a racist.
“I take it as a personal insult that people think I would have a [nearly 40-year] friendship with a racist,” said Walker. “People who think that don’t know what they’re talking about. Growing up in the Deep South, I’ve seen racism up close. I know what it is, and it isn’t Donald Trump.”
Walker, who also spoke on how Trump has positively responded to times shaped by Black Lives Matter demonstrations, said he has been friends for 37 years with the commander-in-chief.
“[Trump] shows how much he cares about social justice and the Black community through his actions, and his actions speak louder than stigma or slogans on a jersey,” Walker said. “He keeps right on fighting to improve the lives of Black Americans and all Americans.”
