Howard University has entered a partnership with the Universidad del Valle of Cali in Colombia that will benefit each university and their surrounding communities of African descent.

The agreement, which calls for student and faculty exchanges between the two schools, will have Howard’s faculty travel during the spring of 2019 to Colombia to teach a semester-long program on race, ethnicity and identity in Colombia.

“Our visit laid the ground work for us to connect our students and community of Howard University with Universidad del Valle in a historic way,” Tonija Hope Navas, director of the Ralph Bunche International Affairs Center at Howard University, said in a statement. “During the academic year of 2018-19, we will produce a series of lectures, presentations and activities in honor of Colombia — highlighting the successes and examining the challenges that face their marginalized communities.”
