Maryland’s coronavirus cases and related hospitalizations are beginning to descend from the pandemic-era highs of the past two months.

The state reported just 903 new cases Monday, down from 1,566 reported the previous day, according to a health department tracker.

For comparison, the state reported 3,732 cases on Jan. 8 and a record-high 3,792 cases on Dec. 4. Prior to Tuesday, Maryland hadn’t reported fewer than 1,000 new daily cases since Nov. 3.

Maryland currently has 1,413 virus-related hospitalizations, a marked drop from the record 1,952 recorded on Jan. 12.

The state’s positivity rate also fell slightly Monday to 5.67%, with 5% as the target, according to public health experts.

As of Monday, Maryland has reported 364,553 cases, including 7,193 related deaths, since the outset of the pandemic, according to health department statistics.

The state’s coronavirus vaccine rollout is currently in phase 1C, which allows vaccinations for residents 65 and older, workers in food and agriculture production, critical manufacturing, public mass transit, grocery stores and veterinary occupations, postal workers, and clergy and their support staff.

The state has administered 699,733 vaccine doses so far.
