New Dialing Procedure for 202 Area Code Begins Saturday

All D.C. residents with the 202 area code will be required to use the area code when dialing local numbers beginning Saturday.

All local calls made within the 202 area code must be placed using 10 digits (area code + the seven-digit telephone number), according to the D.C. Public Service Commission. From Saturday on, calls placed using seven digits will not be completed.

New numbers in the region may be assigned with the 771 code beginning Nov. 9. The new area code was assigned by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator addition to the 202 code after it was determined the old code was nearly out of assignable phone numbers.

Important info:
– Customers’ current telephone numbers, including the current area code, will not change.
– Customers who plan to get a new phone number on and after Nov. 9 may be assigned a phone number with the 771 area code.
– Customers will need to start dialing the area code + telephone number for all local calls, including calls within the same area code.
– Customers will continue to dial 1 + area code + telephone number for all long-distance calls.
– What is a local call now will remain a local call.
– The price of a call, coverage area, or other rates and services will not change due to the overlay.
– Only three digits are required to reach 911, as well as 211, 311, 711 and 811.
