“Woke,” a new comedy series premiering Wednesday on Hulu, follows Keef (Lamorne Morris), an African American cartoonist finally on the verge of mainstream success when an unexpected incident involving misidentification by the police changes everything.
“Woke’s” dry humor is similar to the kind used in the iconic and award-winning show “The Office.” It’s as funny as it can be with the topic being so controversial.
If you have ever had an interaction with the police and left thinking, “How could that happen to me?” you will enjoy the way the film displays that realization. Although, certain scenes may trigger anger from your past or the current racial climate in America.
Imagine a Black person who loves comic books as an adult who has some Caucasian friends and grew up in a nice neighborhood. Now picture who you think police like to mess with. Those images don’t align in our heads. The description of a 6-foot-tall Black man fits many men, regardless of their background or career status.
It’s hard to imagine the weight that is carried by Black men every day but Morris, best known for playing Winston in the Fox sitcom “New Girl,” does an excellent job delivering a glimpse.
You may have wondered what goes on in a Black man’s head and why they sometimes do crazy unexplainable things, this show may give you a better understanding. Keef, at least in the first two episodes, stays isolated in his head most of the time. That isolation causes trouble in his relationship and with his job.
With a fresh interpretation of the world around him, Keef must now decipher the conflicting voices and ideas that confront him, all without losing everything he’s come to know as reality.
