Barbara Flack-Darko
Flack-Darko, a longtime journalist, editor and advocate of equal rights, died Feb. 8 at age 72 after a bout with breast cancer. She was founder and editor of The Montgomery Times, a one-woman publication catered to Montgomery County’s growing Black population.

Cherry, 79, founder of “From the Heart Ministries Worldwide,” died Feb. 16 in Fairfax, Va.
Dr. LaSalle D. Leffall Jr.
Leffall, a surgeon, oncologist, professor and civic leader, died May 25.
“It is with a heavy heart that I write to share that an icon of Howard University and a giant in the field of Medicine, Dr. LaSalle D. Leffall Jr., has passed away,” said Howard University President Wayne A.I. Frederick in a letter to HU students, staff and community.

Evans, 90, father of Dr. Tony Evans, died Nov. 26 in Baltimore.
Alfonso Gibson
Gibson, a retired Metropolitan Police Department deputy chief, died Dec. 18. The Pittsburgh-born Gibson graduated from American University, starting his career with the Metropolitan Police Department in 1961.
Constance T. Laws
Laws, a retired D.C. Public Schools educator, died Dec. 22. She was the mother of the late Laurence M. Laws.
Samuel Graves
Graves, affectionately known as “Sam,” died Dec. 25. He was a retired officer with U.S. Park Police’s Mounted Unit, a Master Mason and was affiliated with Prince Hall #14 and Chapter #5 Our Eastern Star in D.C.
Beatrice Odom Scott
Scott, a stalwart member of the Ashburton community of northwest Baltimore and a teacher in the Baltimore City Public Schools for decades, died Dec. 26. She was 77.
Ulysses D. Currie
Currie, a Maryland politician, died Dec. 27 at age 84. He was a member of the Democratic Party, where he represented District 25 in Prince George’s County, first in the House of Delegates from 1987 to 1995, then in the Senate from 1995 to 2019.
