Pelosi: House Will Proceed With Articles of Impeachment Against Trump

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday the U.S. House of Representatives will proceed with articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.

In an announcement on Capitol Hill, Pelosi said “the president leaves us no choice” in pursuing the impeachment.

“In the course of today’s events it becomes necessary for us to address, among other grievances, the president’s failure to execute the law,” Pelosi said. “Sadly, but with confidence and humility, with allegiance to our founders and our heart full of love for America, today, I am asking our chairmen to proceed with articles of impeachment.”

Pelosi formed her announcement around the creation of the Constitution and its impeachment provision. She brought up the history of the country’s founding members and why they created the impeachment provision, in order to avoid a “king-president” in the future.

The House Judiciary Committee announced after Pelosi’s speech that it will hold its next impeachment hearing on Monday at 9 a.m. EST. The committee will be presented with evidence from Democratic and GOP lawyers that was collected during the inquiry, NBC reported.

In Pelosi’s announcement, she did not say when the committees would need to complete the articles of impeachment or when a full House vote would take place. Pelosi also did not say whether the impeachment articles would include anything from Democrats’ previous investigations before the possible quid pro quo with Ukraine surfaced.

“The facts of the Ukraine situation just changed everything,” Pelosi said to the press at her usual weekly press conference held later Thursday morning.

Pelosi’s announcement comes just a day after the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing where three of four constitutional experts said that Trump has committed impeachable offenses.
