From the secret writings of Anna Gordy Gaye, the sister of the iconic founder of Motown Records, Berry Gordy Jr., the musical “Pride & Joy” will share excerpts from her diary about the untold love story of Anna and Marvin Gaye. The musical makes its world premiere in the District, Wednesday, May 1 and features 28 songs from the legendary Motown catalogue including Marvin Gaye’s most beloved hits. The show serves as a testament of love and intrigue, taking the audience down memory lane as we witness the path on which D.C. native Marvin Gaye traveled during his ascent from local singing sensation to international superstar. New Jersey native Jarran Muse stars as young Marvin, reviving a role he portrayed in the hit Broadway show, “Motown the Musical.” Muse, hand-chosen by Gordy Jr., has been dubbed by the Motown founder as capturing “the essence of Marvin Gaye.” The musical, two years in the making, comes to the stage through the creative workings of New Day Entertainment. Marvin Gaye III serves as one of the writers. The play runs through May 12 at the National Theatre.
