Media mogul and lifelong Democrat Robert Johnson doesn’t have much faith that his party can take over the White House in 2020.
Johnson, founder of BET, backed his claim in a CNBC weekend interview where he stated his belief that none of the Democratic contenders can beat Donald Trump.
“I think the president has always been in a position where it’s his to lose based on his bringing a sort of disruptive force into what would be called political norms,” Johnson said. “If you take a snapshot today, I don’t think that group is capable of beating Trump despite what the polls say.”
Johnson added that the “problem” is Trump’s ability to “dominate the news cycle” and disrupt political norms, coupled with the Democrats’ failure to position themselves “enough in the middle” where “most of the voters are.”
Johnson also said that while he has long known and likes billionaire Michael Bloomberg, who recently entered the crowded field of Democratic hopefuls, he still carries the baggage of the controversial stop-and-frisk policing efforts from his time as mayor of New York City.
