Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan says her city has fully vaccinated 70% of residents 12 and older against the coronavirus.
The mark was reached Wednesday, making Seattle the first major American city to do so, Durkan said Wednesday.
The mayor’s office also said that 78% of residents 12 and older have begun the coronavirus inoculation process but are not yet fully vaccinated.
The city said it has administered more than 249,000 vaccines to more than 131,000 people, CNN reported.
Coronavirus rates and deaths in Seattle and King County are declining, the city said in a press release. In King County, an estimated 95% of all new coronavirus cases are in people who haven’t started the vaccination process, the release said.
Nationwide, President Biden has set a goal of having 70% of all American adults at least partially vaccinated by July 4, though the country currently looks to be off the pace. As of Friday, 64% of all Americans have received at least one vaccine dose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
So far, roughly 141 million people have been fully vaccinated nationwide, according to CDC data.
