Skipping Breakfast and Type II Diabetes

Skipping breakfast is not uncommon in today’s busy and hectic world. In fact, is estimated that up to 25% of Americans skip breakfast on a regular basis. However, we are led to believe that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But is it really? The eat/skip breakfast dilemma was tested in a 4-month long randomized controlled trial. This study compared recommendations to eat or skip breakfast in 309 overweight/obese men and women. At end of the trial period, there was no difference in weight between groups. It simply didn’t matter whether people ate or skipped breakfast.

Skipping breakfast is a common part of many intermittent fasting practices, which have been shown to effectively reduce calorie intake, increase weight loss and improve metabolic health. However, it’s important to mention that intermittent fasting and/or skipping breakfast does not suit everyone, especially if you have diabetes.

Keeping blood sugar levels at a normal rate is vital for managing the diabetes. What you eat or rather what you don’t eat has a major impact on your blood glucose. Skipping meals may put you at risk for developing low blood sugar. Balancing your food consumption with your medications is key, whether you are taking oral drugs or using insulin injections.

The effects of skipping breakfast on diabetics was first studied in 2015. This study, found that skipping breakfast is associated with a significant increase in sugar spikes in the blood and the HbA1C (the average levels of glucose in the blood during the last three months). Fasting until lunch increases the fatty acids in the blood, which makes insulin inefficient in the reduction of glucose levels in the blood. The study was unable to explain exactly why skipping breakfast caused such blood sugar spikes, but the researchers theorised that perhaps the pancreatic beta cells essentially forget what they were supposed to do if the time gap between meals was too long. As a result, blood glucose levels increase. Therefore, it is recommended that patients with Type II diabetes should not skip breakfast at any time, since in doing important damages in the function of the beta cells could occur, as well as, possibly leading to blood sugar spikes and impairment in insulin function, even if diabetics don’t eat in excess at lunch or dinner.

Skipping breakfast is good for those that practice intermittent fasting or those individuals that want to lose a few pounds but not if they have diabetes, especially Type II. So, if you have this condition, be aware and be responsible and do not attempt to skip breakfast. Doing so will cause more damage than good.
