Dr. Jerome Adams, the U.S. surgeon general, said Monday he will get a coronavirus vaccination without hesitation, contending that it will be safe and effective based on science.

“The most reassuring thing I can say to you, America, is that when they tell me that I can get the vaccine, I will get it, because I know that’s the best way to protect myself and to protect my family and my community,” Adams said during an appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Adams said his mission as of late is traveling the country to help convince others, including presidents of historically Black colleges and universities, that the vaccines have been developed safely and properly vetted.

Adams said he will continue to work “to help people understand the safety that went into this process, not just the speed,” CNN reported.

As of Monday afternoon, the U.S. has roughly 12.3 million coronavirus cases and 257,000 related deaths — both tops globally — according to a Johns Hopkins University tracker.
