The U.S. had 102,831 new coronavirus cases Wednesday — the highest single-day increase since the onset of the pandemic and the first time the number has surpassed the six-figure mark.

The country also had 1,097 virus-related deaths Wednesday, CNN reported, citing a Johns Hopkins University tracker.

The U.S. reported more than 600,000 new cases in a week for the first time, and experts warn a surge in infections could get worse as winter approaches.

As of Thursday, the U.S. has more than 9.5 million coronavirus cases and 234,000 related deaths — both tops globally — according to the Johns Hopkins tracker.
