The St. Elizabeths East campus recently added a residential component to its ongoing development.
On Nov. 23, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D), along with the staff of the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, welcomed new occupants into The Residences at St. Elizabeths East, an apartment community at the historic campus located in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Ward 8.
Bowser said the new facility, located south of the Entertainment and Sports Arena, will be a boon to the St. Elizabeths East campus and the ward.
“With the first residents moving into their homes at the re-imagined St. Elizabeths, it is safe to say that this campus is finally seeing the renaissance that the residents of Ward 8 deserve,” she said. “Together, we remain focused on the ensuring that our longtime residents are benefiting from all of the new amenities and opportunities that are coming to the area.”
D.C. Council member Trayon White (D-Ward 8) expressed excitement about the facility and what it means for the ward.
“Residents are excited about what’s happening in the ward,” White said. “This campus is alive today. Residents want somewhere nice to live and to raise their families.”
The Residences at St. Elizabeths East will ultimately consist of 252 units, with four percent studios, 44 percent one bedrooms, 17 percent two bedrooms and 35 percent three bedrooms. Amenities include a club room, secured parking, fitness area, playground, outdoor grilling area, community rooms and recreational areas.
There are affordable units available for households earning up to 50 percent of the city’s median family income (Median Family Income), which translates to $58,600 for a family of four. The affordable units include 19 available up to 30 percent of the MFI and 183 units available for 31-50 percent of the MFI; another 50 units are market rate available.
Flaherty & Collins co-developed The Residences at St. Elizabeths East with the Anacostia Economic Development Corporation (AEDC).
Stan Jackson, president and CEO of AEDC, said The Residences at St. Elizabeths East “is another step in making a positive impact on our East of the River community.”
“With all of the great projects happening here, it connects, activates and enhances the relationship of the campus to the community, creating a shared quality of life experience for all,” Jackson said.
Tom Gay serves as the property manager for The Residences at St. Elizabeths East. Gay said the facility will be secured by Kastle Systems and BDS Protective Services.
“BDS will serve as the foot patrol,” Gay said. “There will be cameras throughout the entire facility and BDS will secure this facility from 5:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.”
Gay said residents will be able to use the community rooms for free but non-resident use hasn’t been discussed by management.
Gay said the facility will accept housing vouchers and service pets are allowed.
Angelica Johnson attended the event and walked around with the facility with a smile on her face. She will move into her three-bedroom apartment in January and says she can hardly wait.
“I am excited about moving here,” she said. “This is brand new. I will like it here because it is close to my job at the District Department of Transportation. I will be moving here from Upper Marlboro so this will be my first District experience.”
