Virginia recorded a one-day record 1,615 new cases of the coronavirus, the state health department reported Tuesday.

It was the second consecutive day a record high was reached after a surge in testing the past week.

Northern Virginia, the suburbs and exurbs of the District of Columbia, reported 981 new cases, down slightly from 1,069 cases reported Monday, according to health department statistics. The commonwealth’s total number of COVID-19 cases stands at 39,342, with Northern Virginia accounting for 22,078 or 56.1%.

The commonwealth’s total number of deaths stands at 1,236, with Northern Virginia reporting more than half with 658, health department statistics indicate. Fairfax County, the most populous jurisdiction reported 340 deaths, more than a quarter for the commonwealth.
