Virginia Military Institute has appointed a Black general as its interim superintendent amid investigations into allegations of racial bigotry at the school.
The selection of retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Cedric Wins, a VMI alumnus, was announced Friday and comes on the heels of the recent resignation of Gen. J.H. Binford Peay III, who left after a Washington Post article detailed several incidents of alleged racism at the Lexington school.
An independent investigation into the allegations is being paid for by the state from funds totaling as much as $1 million approved by the Virginia State General Assembly.
Wins, who graduated from VMI in 1985, is the first Black to lead the school, Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.
A permanent superintendent is expected to be in place by next summer, according to a VMI news release.
