The 2020 New York City Marathon, which had been scheduled for Nov. 1, has been canceled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, race organizers said Wednesday.

New York Road Runners, the event organizer, decided along with the mayorโ€™s office to cancel the event out of coronavirus-related health and safety concerns.

โ€œWhile the marathon is an iconic and beloved event in our city, I applaud the New York Road Runners for putting the health and safety of both spectators and runners first,โ€ New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement. โ€œWe look forward to hosting the 50th running of the marathon in November of 2021.โ€
