Despite bipartisan recommendations that a Supreme Court replacement for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg not be prioritized until after the Nov. 3 election, President Donald Trump said Monday that he would probably announce a nominee by the end of this week.
“I think it’ll be on Friday or Saturday,” Trump said on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends.” “We will have probably services on Thursday or Friday, as I understand it. … We should wait until the services are over, for Justice Ginsburg, and so we’re looking probably at Friday, or maybe Saturday.”
Ginsburg died of pancreatic cancer Friday at age 87. The liberal icon’s death sparked near-immediate debate over when her successor should be chosen, with many on the left arguing that the decision should be held off until after November’s presidential election.
Asked who was on his short list, Trump responded that he was considering a handful of nominees.
“I’d rather not say, but there are two fantastic people. So, I’m looking at five — probably four — but I’m looking at five very seriously. I’m going to make a decision on either Friday or Saturday, I will announce it either Friday or Saturday,” Trump said.
