Prince George’s County Sheriff John D.B. Carr is set to launch his “Men Who Read” campaign on World Book Day on Tuesday at the Office of the Sheriff headquarters.
The campaign is designed to challenge our community to join in on the fight with the Office of the Sheriff to combat illiteracy among youth, particularly young boys.
“As of today, statistics show that girls read more than boys in just about every developed country, and it’s a big reason why girls have greater educational outcomes,” Carr said. “Supported facts also state that 40% of girls read at least 30 minutes a day, compared to only about a quarter of boys who do the same. The same study found that 44% of girls said reading was one of their favorite hobbies, while only 24% of boys said the same.”
Carr said overall boys aren’t reading as much as girls.
“I must do my part to bring awareness with a positive solution,” the sheriff said.
Carr said the reading gender gap hurts boys as they get older and have trouble securing jobs and careers. He is asking 100 men to take the pledge to support the cause.
