Roughly 10 million Americans fell behind in their rental or mortgage payments this month amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to a Census Bureau-conducted survey.

Those Americans also said their household was likely to miss next monthโ€™s payment as well, CNN reported.

โ€œTo be able to understand the eviction crisis that weโ€™re facing today, we have to recognize where we were before COVID-19 came to our country โ€” and that was in the midst of a severe affordable housing crisis,โ€ said Diane Yentel, president and CEO of the National Low-Income Housing Coalition, CNN reported.

The housing coalition said the U.S. has a shortage of seven million affordable rental homes.

As of Friday, the U.S. had roughly 8.9 million coronavirus cases and 229,000 related deaths, both tops globally, according to a Johns Hopkins University tracker.
