Studio Theatre announced its 2025-2026 season Wednesday, featuring recent Broadway and off-Broadway productions while maintaining its focus on contemporary plays that challenge audiences.
The season begins with “The Heart Sellers” by Lloyd Suh, directed by Studio Associate Artistic Director Danilo Gambini. The play explores two immigrants forming a friendship amid adversity.
Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel’s “Mother Play: A Play in Five Evictions” follows, chronicling an unconventional family led by a resilient single mother raising two gay children in the late 20th century. The play has local connections, with the family relocating to various D.C. suburbs throughout the story.
Dave Malloy’s “Octet,” a musical examining technology’s human impact performed entirely with voices, will be directed by Studio’s Artistic Director David Muse.
Rachel Bonds’ “Jonah,” a recent off-Broadway success that plays with time and reality while exploring trauma and trust, is also scheduled. District theater veteran Psalmayene 24 returns to Studio to direct Ossie Davis’ 1960s work “Purlie Victorious,” a comedy addressing slavery’s legacy and American race relations. One additional production will be announced later.
As a special presentation in October and November, close-up magician Harry Milas will perform “The Unfair Advantage,” combining magic with insights into card cheating, limited to 35 audience members per show.
“At Studio, we do what we do because we believe that it matters, that confrontational and fearless art has intrinsic value,” Muse said in an email to patrons.
Season subscriptions are available now, with single tickets on sale later this summer.
