Thousands of participants laced up their running shoes Sept. 20 for the 39th annual Whitman-Walker Walk & 5K to End HIV, raising $370,000 for the organization’s HIV/AIDS health care services.

The signature fundraiser drew walkers and runners to Anacostia Park along the banks of the Anacostia River to support Whitman-Walker’s mission of providing comprehensive health care to those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS.

NBC4 morning weatherman Chuck Bell and iHeart Media HOT99.5 morning DJ Shelby SOS co-hosted the festivities. Joe Houston, founder and president of WeFit gym in the Congress Heights neighborhood’s Sycamore & Oak facility, led participants in a pre-event warm-up.

Live entertainment along the route featured performances by Cam Sounds, Bliss the Violinist and Lennard Jack Jr. The Anacostia Business Improvement District and Art to Go-Go also participated in the event, with Art to Go-Go providing shuttle service from Metro stations to the starting line.
