This Christmas marks a profound milestone: the 25th anniversary of the day my mother, Fannie Estelle Hill Grant, became my “Christmas Angel.” She transitioned on Christmas Day in 2000 at 4 a.m. after a battle with Type 2 diabetes. Though two and a half decades have passed, the memory of her feels as fresh as yesterday.

To honor her, I adorn my tree with angel ornaments, but her true legacy isn’t found in decorations โ€” it’s found in service. My mother lived by the sentiment of the classic gospel hymn made famous by Mahalia Jackson: “If I can help somebody as I travel along … then my living shall not be in vain.”

She didn’t just listen to those words; she lived them. Despite having nine children of her own, she always found room for more. She opened our home to children in need, including one we still cherish today. Her name is Jacqui Williams. She became the “fifth Grant Sister.” This spirit of selfless love was evident at her funeral in North Carolina; the motorcade was so long you couldn’t see the end. I remember a stranger asking, “Who was that lady? Why are there so many people here?” The answer was simple: That is what happens when you live a life of giving.

Her life was a walking testament to Scripture:

โ€ข Galatians 6:2: “Bear ye one another’s burdens.”

โ€ข Hebrews 6:10: God will not forget your “labor of love.”

โ€ข Matthew 25:40: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these … you did for me.”

In these challenging economic times, with many facing the loss of food assistance and basic security, the call to serve is louder than ever. This year, I urge you to move beyond materialism. Become an “Earthly Christmas Angel.” Whether it’s providing groceries, clothes or a simple word of encouragement, make sure your living is not in vain.

Happy Heavenly Birthday, Mother Grant. We miss you, we love you, and your children, grandchildren, other family and friends promise to keep your legacy of love alive.

Ways to Give Back This Season

If you feel moved to become an “Earthly Angel” this year, consider these resources to help those in need:

โ€ข Provide a Meal: Use the Feeding America Food Bank Finder to donate or volunteer at a pantry near you.

โ€ข Donate Essentials: Find local shelters through Great Nonprofits to provide clothing and toiletries.

โ€ข Support Children: Spread holiday joy through programs like Toys for Tots.

In closing, let me say Merry Christmas to all. It is my prayer that you will truly be blessed during this Christmas season, regardless of your belief. Enjoy all of the holidays, especially Hanukkah. To all of you out there who lost your mother, father, sister or brother, just know that their living was not in vain. As long as we live, we will continue to cherish their memory! Merry Christmas to all, and a Happy New Year too!
