During Howard University’s 158th Commencement, Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser delivered the keynote address and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree. Her appearance drew controversy and protests from some students and graduates who booed and chanted “Free D.C.” during her speech. Despite the pushback, Bowser acknowledged the protests and advised the class to be comfortable being misunderstood, noting that, like them, she was “graduating too.” Other honorees included former Disney CEO Bob Iger and interim Spelman College President Rosalind Brewer.
