The stakes in this year’s elections are high. From the Mayor’s office to the D.C. Council and our Delegate to Congress, the leaders chosen this year will influence critical issues that directly affect older adults and their families. These include Social Security, caregiving, aging in place, housing, transportation, and access to health care. AARP DC created this guide with one goal in mind: to ensure you have clear, accessible information about where candidates stand on the issues that matter most to you.
Using research and survey data from District residents, AARP DC developed a set of questions that were shared with candidates across key races. At the same time, this election brings an important change to how we vote in the District. For the first time, ranked choice voting (RCV) will be used in races with three or more candidates. This new system allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference, first choice, second choice, third choice, and so on, rather than selecting just one candidate.
We recognize that any change to the voting process can feel unfamiliar, especially for voters who have participated in elections for decades. That’s why education and preparation are so critical.
