Why is homeownership in D.C. important?
Kruze, Southeast D.C.
โOwnership in D.C. is important to be able to have something you own. The only thing is you donโt own the land, so thatโs something to be conscious of if youโre going to buy a home.โ
Afrah Ali, Northwest D.C.
“I think itโs really important for us [to have] homeownership in these communities for young Black and brown homeowners as thereโs so much rapid change happening in this city.โ
Michael โMikeโ Pratt, Northwest D.C.
“Homeownership in D.C. is super important to me as a Black person, specifically just because of the fact that D.C. has always been Chocolate City, and having ownership in a city that doesn’t really represent you in Congress or in the government is super vital. [And]โฆ you have the ability to actually [have] generational wealth.โ
Charles โChuckyโ Isom II, Southeast D.C.
โI grew up in Washington, D.C., born and raised in Southeast: born at DC General; my dad and mom had an apartment over in Savannah Terrace [in] Southeast, we stayed there for four years. Then we moved into this community off K Street and Minnesota Avenue in 1972. So, I’m instilled or ingrained with Washingtonian inside my heart, and especially Southeast. When I graduated from high school and went into the service, and coming out, [going to] college, I knew I was going to eventually purchase a home in Washington, D.C., and lo and behold, I did.โ
