DMV native Frances Tiafoe made history and simultaneously marked a new career milestone with a great championship match performance Sunday at the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle, Germany.

Tiafoe defeated his good friend, California tennis player Taylor Fritz, 6-4, 6-4, on the Halle grass to become the first-ever American to hoist the trophy since the ATP 500 event launched in 1993.

โ€œWeโ€™ve been working hard since the end of last season and, as we like to say, we keep reaching new heights,โ€ said Tiafoe, addressing his team at the trophy presentation.

The 28-year-old marked a personal milestone as well, capturing his first-ever ATP 500 tournament win, having been 0-4 in previous finals above the ATP 250 level. This marks Tiafoe’s fourth ATP title and first in three years.

After suffering an underwhelming exit at the French Open grand slam earlier this month to Italian Matteo Arnaldi, Tiafoe says he turned to one of his favorite Biblical scriptures, Romans 8:18 โ€“ย โ€œThe pain that youโ€™re feeling does not compare to the joy that is coming.โ€ย

That has continued to ring true to him and has shown in his recent results.

โ€œI had one of the toughest losses of my career at the French Open, and to come back and have a good week in Stuttgart and win here for my biggest title, beating the players I did,โ€ Tiafoe said, โ€œitโ€™s a huge testimony to that quote. Itโ€™s something Iโ€™ve been living by.โ€

Tiafoe looked smooth as he served with power and precision throughout the first set, leading to a stellar win percentage of 94% on first serves compared to Fritzโ€™s 72%.

Despite letting several early break points slip away, Tiafoe stayed resilient, finally converting a crucial fifth break point to propel himself to a 6-4 first-set victory.

โ€œI donโ€™t even know what clip I was serving in the first set, but I felt like I couldnโ€™t miss one,โ€ he continued.

The second set was much of the same for the DMV native, showing nerves of steel en route to a 6-4 second-set victory, securing just his second-ever ATP win over Taylor Fritz and emerging victorious on the grass courts of Halle.

โ€œI had no troubles on my serve the whole match, and it just feels good to get this done,โ€ Tiafoe reflected. โ€œI played a clean match, but I had to. Heโ€™s a hell of a player and a hell of a competitor, too. I knew he was going to make it hard out there at the end, and I played some great tennis.โ€

Following his victory in Halle, Tiafoe is taking the week off to prepare for the grass-court grand slam at Wimbledon, taking place in London, England, starting on June 29.
