Dear Seniors,

Happy September!

What a wonderful summer it has been! From parades and days at the pool, launches with the Villages, to engaging activities at our Senior Wellness Centers, we have truly made the most of the season. Across the District, older adults stayed active, connected with friends and neighbors, discovered new experiences, and embraced opportunities to thrive and Live Boldly. We hope this summer brought you joy, laughter, and wonderful memories to carry with you into the fall.

As we welcome a new season, September gives us many opportunities to celebrate our community, prioritize our well-being, and stay connected. From September 15 through October 15, we recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich history, vibrant cultures, and many contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Here in Washington, DC, we are especially grateful for the Hispanic and Latino residents, families, caregivers, community leaders, and older adults who contribute to the diversity and strength of our city. This month, we celebrate your stories, traditions, accomplishments, and the many ways you continue to enrich our community.

September is also National Preparedness Month, reminding us that taking steps to prepare for emergencies can help protect our safety, independence, and well-being. Emergencies can happen at any time, but a little preparation today can make a meaningful difference when it matters most. Take time this month to review your emergency plan, check your emergency supplies, make sure medications and important documents are easy to access, and stay connected with family, friends, and neighbors. Being prepared can provide greater peace of mind for you and those who care about you. For more information about emergency preparedness in the District, visit ready.dc.gov or call (202)727-6161.

We also recognize Falls Prevention Awareness Week, taking place September 21–25. This national campaign raises awareness about falls and fall-related injuries while highlighting simple ways to help older adults remain safe, active, and independent. I encourage you to join Home Care Partners for their annual Falls Prevention Awareness Week (FPAW) events. This will take place on Monday, September 21, and Tuesday, September 22, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 899 North Capitol St. NE. Attendees can participate in free screenings and activities, including balance tests, medication reviews, and home safety education. Resources will be available for people of all ages, along with free snacks and giveaways. For registration and additional information, visit tinyurl.com/dcfpaw2026.

Finally, September brings one of our most meaningful celebrations of the year, National Centenarian Day! On September 23, we will continue the tradition of honoring our centenarians at Mayor Bowser’s 40th Annual Centenarian Salute. This special celebration recognizes DC’s oldest residents and honors the remarkable lives, accomplishments, and legacies they have shared with our city and generations of Washingtonians. Each centenarian will receive a commemorative medallion and personalized certificate from Mayor Bowser in recognition of this extraordinary milestone.

As we welcome fall, stay prepared for what lies ahead and make the most of every opportunity to stay connected, healthy, active, and engaged. Thank you for all that you bring to Washington, DC, and for the many ways you continue to make our city stronger.

In Service,

Charon P.W. Hines
