At least a dozen students who attend Independence High School in Loudoun County, Va., tested positive for the coronavirus after many students returned from a club cheerleading contest in Richmond.

Officials with the Loudoun County Public Schools said close contacts were quarantined and children who test positive are recovering from home, WRC-TV (Channel 4) reported.

Club sports arenโ€™t school-sanctioned events.

Dr. David Goodfriend, the county health director, said the risk for getting the coronavirus increases for young people and parents participating in club sports who donโ€™t adhere to social distancing and mask-wearing protocols while traveling.

โ€œWhen you carpool, youโ€™re not following six-foot distancing,โ€ Goodfriend said, WRC reported. โ€œYouโ€™re having people outside your โ€˜bubbleโ€™ with you, for extended periods of time.โ€
