Boston now has its first Black and first female mayor.

Kim Janey, a Roxbury native who was City Council president, took control Monday night after Marty Walsh officially resigned to become President Bidenโ€™s labor secretary.

A ceremonial swearing-in for Janey will be held Wednesday.

โ€œWeโ€™re an extremely diverse city from different backgrounds and different nationalities and different skin colors,โ€ Janey said earlier Monday, CBS Newsโ€™ local affiliate reported. โ€œI think itโ€™s a good thing for our city.โ€

Janey, elected the first woman to represent District 7 in 2017, was voted president of the council in 2020.

She will serve as acting mayor until the November election, but hasnโ€™t said if she plans to seek a full term.
