Georgetown University has announced its plans for the 2021 spring commencement, which will consist of a mixture of in-person and virtual events amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Georgetown President John J. DeGioia, in a letter to the school community Tuesday, explained there will be a May 23 virtual ceremony conferring degrees for all 2021 graduates, followed by individual school and program-based virtual ceremonies.

There will also be award ceremonies occurring virtually in the days leading to the university-wide graduation, according to the letter.

The universityโ€™s campuses are also developing small-scale, in-person events, but for academic degree and certificate earners only, DeGioia said.

Additionally, DeGioia will offer in-person celebrations in 2022 to the classes of 2021 and 2020.

โ€œI recognize that this is not the commencement experience that our students envisioned when they first arrived at Georgetown,โ€ he said in the letter. โ€œI share your disappointment in not being able to gather in person and celebrate our studentsโ€™ accomplishments alongside family and friends. โ€ฆ We hope these future gatherings can be a time when our graduates can reconnect and make new memories with the friends and peers who shaped their Georgetown experience.โ€
