AmeriHealth Caritas District of Columbia, the largest Medicaid-managed care organization in D.C., joined forces Saturday with Howard University Hospital and the Howard University Faculty Practice Plan to provide the community with health screenings in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

During the โ€œHoward University Hospital Summer Tune-Upโ€ on the HU campus, attendees benefited from onsite health screenings, such as blood pressure, glucose, dental and body mass index (BMI) screenings. They also had the opportunity to engage in pre-scheduled physical, well-child and/or prostate exams.

โ€œThis was an excellent opportunity for the community to receive important medical check-ups and helpful tips on how to stay well, and to interact with physicians and other health care experts outside of the office or hospital,โ€ said Shelly McDonald Pinkett, chief medical officer for Howard University Hospital.

โ€œThese types of events give us a better understanding of the fact a memberโ€™s perception of their health care provider is extremely important and essential to developing a relationship based on mutual trust,โ€ said attendee Karen Dale. โ€œItโ€™s amazing to see how a change of scenery and perspective often provide the comfort necessary for someone to open up about something as personal as their health.โ€

The fun-filled day also included a live DJ, a variety of food and health snacks, as well as a masseuse for those in need of a little extra relaxation; children enjoyed a moon bounce, face-painting as well as various games and prizes.
