Maryland residents are now among those with the option of obtaining a replacement Social Security card via the agency’s online services.
The Social Security Administration introduced Tuesday the expansion of online services to Maryland residents, which eliminates the need to visit one of the agency’s field offices for replacement cards.
“I’m thrilled about this newest online feature to the agency’s my Social Security portal and the added convenience we are providing residents of Maryland,” said Carolyn Colvin, acting commissioner of Social Security. “We continue to provide world-class customer service to the public by making it safe, fast and easy for people to do business with us online and have a positive government experience. I look forward to expanding this service option across the country.”
Throughout this year, the agency will continue to expand the replacement-card option to other states, which will result in shorter wait times for the public in the 1,200-plus Social Security offices across the country. The online service will also allow staff more time to work with customers who have extensive service needs, officials said.
Maryland residents age 18 or older can request a replacement card online by creating a “my Social Security” account.
Applicants must have a U.S. domestic mailing address and a valid driver’s license or state identification card. They also cannot require any change to their record, such as a name change.
